MOUNT EVEREST
Base Camp Trek (October-November, 2018)
Greetings! My name is Scott Palmer. As a member and coordinator of the Utah2Everest Climbing Team 2018, I thought it would be good to tell you a little about myself and of our collective motivation for this journey. In time, I will post a brief biography of each of our members so that you can identify with us a little more personally.
I am currently in my 25th year as a teacher and former high school administrator with Weber School District, Ogden Utah. I am a retired U.S. Air Force veteran and a veteran of Iraq (2005-06) and have traveled the world. A professional opera singer with Utah Symphony and Opera for twenty one seasons, an avid Peak Bagger & Mountain Biker, professional level Disk Golf player, and recent World Senior Games Gold and Silver medalist in swimming.
As I live life accepting and meeting challenges, my goal has always been to bring my experiences back to the classrooms, and provide for students a real-world sensation of the world we live in. That being said, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you on…
…Another adventure!
October of this year (2018) myself, and six of my friends will be taking a trek to Mount Everest Base Camp, by way of Nepal. A lifelong dream by so many, and obtained by so few. My intent is to provide a daily broadcast/update of questions and answers with the students of Weber School District (Ogden, Utah, enrollment @ 34,000), and Galion Public Schools (my home town, enrollment @ 2,000) Galion, Ohio. With this type of exposure, I will be talking extensively with students about the country and its citizens, the history of its struggles, and the joy and celebration of its beauty, both of the grandeur of its mountain vistas, and of its people. This provides an opportunity for some first-hand experiences for students from opposite sides of the world. Why do I do this? As they say; Once an educator, always an educator".
….Support!
I would like you to meet Hemanta Raj Dahal; Director of one of the schools in Siphal, Kathmandu. In my recent correspondence, we have been made aware of their background. (A dynamic that has changed even more this past two years following the devastating earthquake of 2015).
“Let me tell you a little bit of our school's background. The school has given opportunity to have access to quality education to the children ranging from the mountain areas of Nepal to the hills and the urban lower middle class families. One school we have has been given scholarship to approx. 50 students. Moreover, some people from other parts of the world pay fees for a few poor and needy children. Consequently, those children have got opportunity who otherwise had to walk almost 4 hours to reach the school from their homes. Those who completed their schooling are doing quite good. Some are pursuing their higher studies in the USA, UK and other parts of the world as well”.
The school has the following priorities:
“1. Computers
The school has 14 computers for the students' use with full internet access but they have become quite old. I am also the Chairperson of the School Management Committee. The composition of the committee also consists of the representative of Ministry of Education. School Management Committee had a meeting just last week and the ideas are to explore the possibilities to replace these old PCs/computers but there is financial constraint. Just in December 2009, we received support to buy 2 computers from Danish which we have set up in the Kindergarten.
If you see any possibility to support a few computers (any number), the children coming from the remotest area of Nepal will have opportunity to continue the facilities of learning computer courses and browsing the internet.
2. If you do not think of computers, my second priority is library books. We have already received some support for the library books from other people but because of limited number of books on the shelves, students read those books during the time allocated to them but cannot borrow. We are thinking of increasing the number of books and allow the students of grade 8, 9 & 10 students to borrow books and gradually to all the students.
3. The third priority is some equipment for our science lab. These equipment are extremely essential but I have placed them in the third category because we have received some equipment from other people. Now the students can involve in some practical experiments. However, we need to enhance the quality of the school science lab.
4. The fourth is a laptop and LCD projector so that these equipment can be used to train the teachers using external experts and the teachers also can use them for their tutorial. The school has been recently upgraded up to grade 12”.
Thank you
Hemanta Raj Dahal
Now - Here is howYOU can help...
…..GENEROSITY!
As the possibility of donated items, regardless of its difficulty to deliver, are being considered, it is my hope to raise some funds by way of the "Gofundme" crowdfunding service (link provided on contact page) to provide these much needed educational support materials and help in the overall costs of this project. The power that this bridge we will provide, combined with such a large vast audience, what a wonderful opportunity of learning and compassion to open student’s eyes to the wonder of the world.
Thank you for your support!
